Toronto – Sisay Awgechew, prominent opposition figure, is reportedly abducted in Addis Ababa moments after he was released from prison.

He has been in prison for several years on what many believed is a trumped up charges.

Court ruled that he be released on 100,000 Ethiopian birr bail and was released around 5 P.M. local time.

According to sources, he was abducted as he was leaving Klinto prison for individuals believed to be security officials who covered their face with a mask.

He was reportedly driven away in a vehicle with black windshield. At the time of this writing, his whereabouts are said to be unknown.

Solomon Gezhegne, attorney who  represented Sisay Awgechew spoke to Ethiopian Media Services as to what he knew about his client’s disappearance.

He cited Sisay’s family as saying that “he was waving his hand from inside a vehicle saying he is heading to Federal police.”

There had been similar abductions of prisoners, including Taye Dendea who served as state minister for peace, moments after they were released from prison.

Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Party (EPRP), one of the vocal opposition parties in terms of challenging government policies and rights abuse, on Wednesday said that it has observed the ruling prosperity party’s recurring abductions as if the inhuman arrest of politicians, human rights activists and journalists is not enough.

It called for the government to release Sisay Awgechew and also unconditionally release citizens who are thrown to jail illegally.

In a related development, CPJ on Wednesday called a court process that is transparent, just and legal for the journalists who are charged with “terrorist charges.”

Abiy Ahmed’s administration has jailed dozens of journalists and politicians on alleged grounds of “terrorism” but the arrest is widely understood among politicized Ethiopians as a politically motivated one.
