{"id":189392,"date":"2023-03-02T21:05:16","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T03:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ethiopanorama.com\/?p=189392"},"modified":"2023-03-02T21:05:16","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T03:05:16","slug":"regional-association-for-africa-sets-priorities-for-the-next-four-years-world-meteorological-organization-1252","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ethiopanorama.com\/?p=189392","title":{"rendered":"Regional Association for Africa sets priorities for the next four years\u00a0 &#8211;  World Meteorological Organization 12:52"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/public.wmo.int\/sites\/all\/themes\/wmo\/logo.png?w=800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WMO\">World Meteorological Organization<br \/><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/search?f[0]=field_cloud_tags%3A629\">Africa<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Published  24 February 2023<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Member:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WMO Regional Association I (Africa) has set its priorities for the next four years, with the nomination of Mr Fetene Teshome, the Director General of the Ethiopian Meteorology Institute (EMI) and Permanent Representative (PR) of Ethiopia with WMO as the new President of the Association, and the Director-General of Mozambican National Institute of Meteorology (MNI) and the country\u2019s Permanent Representative (PR) with World Meteorological Organization, Dr Ad\u00e9rito Celso<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/thumbnail_image002_0.jpeg?w=800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"WMO regional association for Africa elects new office holders\" title=\"WMO regional association for Africa elects new office holders\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;F\u00e9lix Aramuge as the Vice President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The high-level session, held from 16 to 17 February resolved that Early Warning for All initiative should be integrated into the regional strategy and priorities with a roadmap for implementation.&nbsp;Members also agreed to seek available opportunity to organize an African Summit on Early Warnings for All, with support from partners. It called on the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) to consider a comprehensive African regional SOFF programme to close Africa\u2019s major gaps in the Global Basic Observing Network (GBON).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his high-level opening address to the Heads of National Meteorological and hydrological Services and decision-makers in Africa, WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas, noted that \u2018\u2019much progress in hydro-meteorological services had been made in the past years\u2019\u2019. \u201cWMO, together with partners, has created new mechanisms like SOFF&nbsp;and Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) to improve financing for Early Warning Systems\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Teshome said early warnings are an essential service that guides decisions which help save life and property, and the Ethiopian Meteorology Institute (EMI) is enhancing its capacity to deliver these services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outgoing President, Daouda Konate, said that the Early Warnings for All&nbsp;Initiative offers an opportunity to provide adequate services to save lives. He noted that digitization of services would help reach the last mile.
