Toronto <\/strong>\u2013 The crisis in the Tigray region of Ethiopia is worsening. The TPLF has rejected extension of terms of the Interim administration on grounds that it \u201cviolates the Pretoria agreement\u201d, and consequently passed a decision to reinstate the Pre-war Tigray Regional State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n TPLF notified Tadesse Worede to peacefully \u201chandover\u201d the administration which the latter sees as \u201cnonsense.\u201d He also warned that the TPLF move is not desirable for the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Federal government is yet to respond. It does not have a structure in the region to enforce law \u2013 like a federal police. And the Interim administration does not have a means to protect itself from forceful TPLF takeover of power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The diplomatic community \u2013 including the European Union<\/a> \u2013 is calling for deescalation. The United States is reportedly considering leveraging the sanction regime against TPLF leaders including asset freeze <\/a>to influence change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n No sign of deescalation so far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Borkena spoke to Abera Nigus, Addis Ababa based lawyer who is from the Tigray region. Describing the interim administration as \u201corphan,\u201d\u00a0 he emphasized that the focus\u00a0 both for the Federal government and TPLF \u2013 whom he described\u00a0 as having similar nature \u2013 on the priority : avoiding war.
