Addis Ababa, May 10 (Prensa Latina) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reportedly requested the release of more than 3,000 migrants, mainly Ethiopians, who remain held in inhumane conditions in Yemen.
Several detention operations were carried out two weeks ago in the city of Aden and the neighboring province of Lahj, in Yemeni territory, and as a result, around 3,000 migrants continue to be held in two temporary detention sites, Addis TV reports.
About 2,500 are held in a football stadium in Aden, where aid workers are fighting disease outbreaks, the information says.
According to Fana Broadcasting Corporate, the IOM said that on April 30, guards fired on migrants detained at a sports facility and two of them suffered gunshot wounds, including one likely paralized for life.
IOM remains very concerned for the people being held in inhumane conditions and hastens efforts with authorities to try to get them released and begin the repatriation process, the report states.
More than 1,400 people detained at a military camp in Lahj were recently released and the main efforts now made by the Organization’s leadership are to bring 237 Ethiopians to Addis Ababa, under the voluntary repatriation program, the note said.
