Two Scandinavian media development organisations, Fojo Media Institute (Fojo) and International Media Support (IMS) and are jointly embarking on a new phase of a four-year media development programme that aims to support the media reform in Ethiopia.
Fojo Media Institute is part of the Swedish Linnaeus University, with a mission to strengthen free, independent and professional journalism, in Sweden and globally. For more than 45 years of continuous operation, we have strengthened our partner organisations’ institutional capacity and trained more than 50 000 journalists from more than 100 countries. Jointly with our partners and individual journalists we have engaged in a wide range of issues related to journalism and democracy, such as media convergence, business management, investigative reporting, fact checking, access to information and managing threats and hate speech.
International Media Support (IMS) is a non-profit organisation working to support media in countries affected by armed conflict, human insecurity and political transition. Across four continents, IMS helps to strengthen professional journalism and ensure that media can operate in challenging circumstances.
The programme addresses the challenges of the Ethiopian media sector within two focus areas:
- Strengthening key actors to contribute to developing and implementing a legislative and institutional framework that supports a free and self-regulated media, ensuring public access to information and promoting an informed and engaged citizenry.
- Strengthening media to become financially sustainable and to produce and disseminate public interest journalism, reflecting the full composition of society through a balanced presence of women and men, age groups and communities.
The programme will work in close cooperation with Ethiopian partners, building on and strengthening their resilience, sustainability, knowledge and expertise.
The position is a full-time position based in Addis Ababa jointly with local staff and supported by staff in Sweden and Denmark.
Job summary
The role of the Programme Manager is to implement and manage the media development programme in Myanmar.
Roles and responsibilities
- Plan, implement, and report the project according to Fojo’s approach and methodology
- Capacitate and mentor partners
- Manage local staff
- Monitor and evaluate the project, in collaboration with Fojo’s M&E advisor
- Ensure budget control within the project
- Recruit and manage external consultants
- Be responsible for internal and external communication for the project
- Represent Fojo Media Institute in Ethiopia
- Contribute to the overall development of Fojo Media Institute and IMS.
Qualifications for the position, essential
- University degree in journalism/media, or an equivalent non-academic education
- Experience from managing projects within the field of development cooperation, preferably in Africa and in media development
- Experience from institutional capacity building
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Experience from measuring results in the field of development cooperation
- Cultural sensitivity
- Experience from financial management of large donor funding
- Experience with and understanding of media and media development
- Ability to work independently while following institutional guidelines and policies
Qualifications for the position, desirable
- 5-10 years of experience from managing projects in the field
- Demonstrated pedagogical skills and theoretical understanding in the field of education/training
- An established and relevant network in the region
- Experience from a newsroom
