Deputy Foreign Minister for African Affairs Ambassador Hamdi Sanad Loza held two meetings with Arab and African ambassadors accredited to Egypt to post them on developments in the talks held between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan on the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Loza said the final round of talks held between the irrigation ministers of the three countries in Egypt on 15-16 September achieved no progress and saw no technical talks due to Ethiopia’s rejection of the Egyptian proposal on the filling and operation of the dam.
Loza added that Ethiopia insisted on limiting discussions on the paper it submitted on 25 September 2018.
He reviewed the overall Egyptian stance on the negotiations and the country’s vision of the dam’s filling and operation which includes generating electricity from the dam without harming the downstream states, particularly Egypt which is mainly depending on the River Nile.
Loza highlighted the main points mentioned in President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s recent speech before the United Nations General Assembly which included that Egypt sought to consolidate cooperation ties with Nile Basin states and understand the keenness of these states, including Ethiopia, to establish projects on the Nile to serve their development plans. But such plans should never harm the interests of Egypt, for which the Nile represents a matter of life and existence, he added.
