The round church at Ch’Elek’Ot (also rendered Chalacot/ Chalaqot/ Chelekot/ Chelikut/ Schelikut), as it was recorded in c. 1867 – 1868, Tigray Region, Ethiopia

Sketch by the Scottish nobleman Ronald Ruthven Leslie-Melville, published in “The Melville Album”: portraits, interiors, tableaux, plus some views of Abyssinia, etc.

Ras Wolde Selassie, governor of the Tigray province between 1788 and 1816, made Chelekot his capital and built a palace in the town, as well as houses for his wives and constructed the church of Chelekot Selassie, which was described as an architecturally impressive example of the circular tukul style, covered in beautiful 19th-century religious paintings.
