The Afar, the indigenous people to the Danakil area, reside in three countries of the Horn of Africa. The predominant majority (about 78%) of the Afar people resides in Ethiopia while the remaining 22% lives in Eritrea and Djibouti. The Danakil is the name that refers to both the Afar people and the place where the oldest human species were discovered. As you can see, it has a triangle shape in light green – called the Afar Triangle.

The Afars are pastoralists known for their long lived wisdom often expressed in proverbs and idiomatic expressions. I heard they have a proverb that closely translates to “a nation that has no access to the sea is the same with a person who has no liver.”
