The African Governance Platform has kicked off a forum on the harmonization of State Reporting Mechanisms on Instruments Focusing on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance. The two-day meeting from 1-2 December 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda, is an implementation of an African Governance Platform (AGP) decision taken during the Statutory Technical and Political meetings of the African Governance Platform held on January 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where members of the Platform called for a meeting to deliberate on harmonizing the State Reporting mechanism for different instruments focusing human rights, democracy, and governance.
The African Governance Platform have various built-in reporting mechanisms to receive reports from State parties for different treaties on human rights, democracy, and governance. For synergy in reporting, a consolidation of the receipt of State Reports from Member States is critical for ease of coordination among Members of the Platform to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
The meeting will provide an opportunity for Platform Members who require State Reports on issues of human rights, governance, and democracy to discuss the possibility of consolidating processes. This will lessen the burden, not only Member States on reporting, but also encourage the streamlining and implementation of different normative instruments relating to human rights, governance, and democracy at the national level.
