Ambassador Meles Alem, the spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has reaffirmed Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to the one-China policy. This reassertion comes on the heels of Ethiopia’s recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland, a move aimed at diversifying Ethiopia’s seaport options and securing sea access.

Ethiopia’s Consistent Stance

Ethiopia’s solidarity with the one-China policy, which asserts that Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic of China, has remained consistent across various administrations. This steadfast commitment is seen as a fundamental pillar of Ethiopia’s foreign policy. Through the years, Ethiopia’s alignment with the one-China policy has forged strong diplomatic ties with China, a key player in the international arena.

China’s Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty

In the light of Ethiopia’s MoU with Somaliland, China has voiced its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. China continues to recognize Somaliland as a part of Somalia, fostering diplomatic dialogue between nations in the region. This stance aligns with China’s foreign policy principles and its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.

Somalia’s Reiteration of the One-China Policy

Parallel to Ethiopia’s reaffirmation, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also restated its unwavering commitment to the one-China policy. This reiteration aligns with Somalia’s foreign policy of non-interference and respect for national sovereignty, principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. Somalia recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of the People’s Republic of China, echoing its commitment to global harmony and regional stability.
