Ethiopians Get Temporary Protected Status Extended Through 2025

About 12,800 Ethiopians in the US will be newly eligible for deportation protections and employment authorization under a Department of Homeland Security extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status.

In a notice posted Friday, DHS cited conditions in the country—including armed conflict and human rights abuses as well as droughts, floods, and a disease outbreak—as justifications for the decision.

About 2,300 current beneficiaries will be eligible to reapply for TPS benefits under the extension. Ethiopia was first designated for the protections, which have a duration of 18 months, in 2022. That status was set to expire in June but will …
