Toronto – What started out as Fano imposed transport restrictions in Gojjam is now spreading to other parts of the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
All roads in Gojjam remained closed to all vehicles except for Ambulances as of August 13.
Ethio News, local Ethiopian news sources, on Tuesday reported that Fano forces in Wollo, Shewa and Gondar have also imposed a restriction on the movement of vehicles.

Road transport between major towns and cities in the Amhara region are completely halted, according to sources.
Movement from Bahir Dar to Gondar, from Addis Ababa to Gojjam and from Addis Ababa to Dessie are halted, according to the sources. Authorities from the regional state had to fly from Bahir Dar to Gondar due to road blockade and the restriction of mobility of vehicles.
The action came in response to the latest round of massive government mobilization and deployment of over 30,000 new forces to different parts to the Amhara region with the aim to decisively defeat Fano forces.
There have been similar campaigns in the past but none of them were proved to be a success.
There have been reports of intense fighting in many parts of the region. In Gojjam, Fano forces claim that they have cleared most of the areas from government forces and were eying to control the regional capital Bahir Dar.
On Monday, an intensive battle was reported in the Bahir Dar area. The city has been in a reported strike for about two days before even Fano forces called the people in the region to participate in activities to support the struggle. Businesses were closed and mobility of vehicles in the city was restricted. There was no official call for the strike and the move is seen as a clear support for the Fano forces. More and more cities are expected to undertake strikes in support of Fano forces.
Intense battles were reported in Shoa. Government reportedly deployed Paratroopers in the Mera Bete and Dera area, and claimed major victory against fano forces. But Fano dismissed it as a pure life. In an interview with Anchor media, Fano Shewa Spokesperson dismissed government claims as lies while admitting that less than “ten fano forces were sacrificed” during the operation. But he described the gains unprecedented since Fano started its operation.
Gondar and Wollo areas also have seen renewed intense fighting between government forces and Fano. Government forces have reportedly suffered losses.
The Defense Force has been claiming victory against Fano forces. The new government plan is “to clear the Amhara region from Fano by the end of September,” but it did not start well, according to credible local news sources as Fano forces are controlling more areas and making additional military gains.
