4.6 quake 2 Nov 12:13 am (GMT +3)
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Metehara, Oromiya, Ethiopia, was reported 35 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, at 12:13 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Āwash (pop. 11,400) located 9 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
