Toronto – The Tigray region of Ethiopia is reportedly witnessing a new political movement aimed at ending oppression in the region.

The movement calls itself “Tintag Woledo Tigray,” which can be translated as “Tigray’s Fire Generation.” Based on information provided on the organization’s social media page, the movement is operating across the region.

According to a report by Ethiopian Reporter, the movement is currently clandestine. It aims to enable people in the region to exercise free choice and have the right to determine their leaders, as well as to live in peace.

In an interview with Ethiopian Reporter, the organizers—who spoke on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns and to avoid pressure—offered insights that reflect the current political climate in the region. A few years ago, the region witnessed the killing of a young leader from another movement.

The new political movement has been in development for about a year, but it was only publicly announced a month ago.

“Oppression is oppression, whether it comes from outside or from within; fight it!” reads the organization’s motto, as shared on its social media page.

The “growing oppression and autocratic nature of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)” and the general political environment of the region are cited as motivating factors behind the formation of this organization.

In 2020, a movement called “Fenkil Tigray” was launched in the region. However, its leader, Yemane Negussu, was killed, with reports at the time suggesting that the TPLF was linked to his death. The “Fenkil Tigray Movement” was subsequently weakened.

Organizers of the new movement, Tintag Woledo Tigray, told The Ethiopian Reporter that they have not yet experienced any actions on the part of those in power that are intended to stop their activities.

When asked how their organization differs from the Fenkil Tigray Movement, the coordinator stated, “We are done with appeasing a force that is oppressive. We are also fed up with resorting to migration to escape it. Our movement will use force whenever it must.”

The new organization claims to have a growing membership, including members from the “Tigray Defense Force.”
