Toronto – Zenaneh Mekonnen, a renowned Ethiopian journalist, passed away in Tel Aviv, Israel, at the age of 68. He had been receiving medical care for an extended period.
Zenaneh served for many years as a reporter and news anchor at the state-owned Ethiopian Radio and Television (ERTV). He left Ethiopia in the late 1980s and had lived in Israel since then.
Additionally, Mekonnen worked as a reporter for the Deutsche Welle (DW) Amharic service in Jerusalem for several years, covering major stories such as the Israeli-Arab conflict and issues in the Gulf region. His work with DW was discontinued due to ongoing health problems.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Mekonnen was born and raised in Azezo, Gondar.
According to DW Amharic, his daughter, Bitania Zenaneh, stated that he will be laid to rest at Yacom Cemetery in Tel Aviv.
