The United Arab Emirates (UAE) marked its 53rd Union Day with a reception hosted by its Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mohammed Salem Al Rashedi, on November 29, 2024, at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa.
The event was attended by Ethiopian government officials, African Union representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, international organizations, business leaders, and other distinguished guests.
In his opening speech, Ambassador Al Rashedi reflected on the UAE’s journey since its formation on December 2, 1971.
“The union under the leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum has enabled the UAE to achieve significant milestones locally, regionally, and internationally,” he said.
He emphasized the strategic partnership between the UAE and Ethiopia, mentioning key areas of cooperation, including political, economic, and cultural engagements.
“High-level exchanges and initiatives like the five million Ethiopian Coders’ program and the agreement for the ‘Aisha 1’ wind energy project are testimony to the growing ties between our nations,” the Ambassador added.
He noted that the initiatives underscore both countries’ commitment to sustainability and clean energy for a greener future.
Representing the Ethiopian government, Mesganu Arga, a state minister of Foreign Affairs, extended his congratulations to the UAE and praised the strong fraternal ties between the two nations. He wished the UAE continued success and prosperity.
“Ethiopia values the strong and historic ties with the United Arab Emirates and wishes its leadership and people continued progress and prosperity,” he remarked. “It is now a time to seize this moment to convert the opportunity and respective positions to our societies adapted for more prosperity and greater security. The expansion of economic cooperation, spearheaded by the leaders of our two countries, and the recent establishment of a bilateral framework marks a pivotal step forward.”
Mesganu emphasized that the UAE is Ethiopia’s key development partner, playing a significant role in areas such as socio-economic and digital development. He noted that the UAE has provided support amounting to USD three billion, further solidifying the strong friendship between the two nations.
“We are grateful to the UAE government for standing with us during challenging times,” he said, highlighting that the multi-faceted and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries paves the way for more stable growth for both populations.
The celebration featured cultural performances from both Emirati and Ethiopian dance groups, as well as a traditional Emirati heritage tent.
The UAE’s Union Day, known as “Eid al-Etihad,” is celebrated annually on December 2 to mark the formation of the United Arab Emirates. This event commemorates the addition of Ras Al Khaimah as the seventh and final emirate, completing the federation on February 10, 1972.
