Qatar has won second place in Ethiopian International Prize for Memorising the Holy Qur’an, Reciting and Adhan. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs Youssef Ahmed Asheer won second place in the first branch of memorising the entire Holy Qur’an. The competition witnessed the participation of 60 countries in its second edition held in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

HE the Undersecretary of Awqaf Dr Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Ghanem al-Thani praised this achievement hailing the efforts of the Qatari contestant. “These successes reflect Qatar’s interest in the Holy Qur’an and the people of Qatar who raise the name of their country in international forums,” he urged. He urged Qatari youth to excel and exert maximum effort to achieve more accomplishments in this important field.

Jassim Abdullah al-Ali, director of the Department of Da’wa and Religious Guidance, congratulated the contestant. He praised the advanced level shown by the representative of Qatar amidst strong competition with an elite group of reciters and muezzins from various Islamic countries.

Al-Ali stressed the keenness of Awqaf to provide the best environment for memorising the Holy Qur’an through its Qur’anic centres throughout the country, which are supervised by an elite group of specialised teachers. “Qatar has recorded a strong presence in international Qur’an competitions. Qatari contestants achieved advanced positions in several international competitions including first place in the Kuwait International Qur’an Competition, the Khartoum Competition and the King Abdulaziz Competition in Makkah in addition to second place in international competitions in Algeria and Morocco and third place in Malaysia and Dubai competitions,” he said.

Fahd Ahmed al-Muhammad, head of the department of the Holy Qur’an and its Sciences at Awqaf, explained that the contestant Youssef Asheer was keen on good and intensive preparation before the start of the competition, which contributed to his achievement.
