Ethiopia’s Federal government still silent on the situation unfolding in Tigray

Borkena
Toronto – Tigray Opposition parties on Thursday announced that they oppose activities to dismantle government structure and take government power through what they called “coup.”
Arena Tigray, Tigray Independence Party and Baytona Tigray released a joint statement condemning the TPLF faction under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremichael.
The parties allege that the activity to undertake a coup is coordinated with the Eritrean government. They stated “urgent action is needed to foil Eritrean government intervention and other foreign powers’ destructive role.” The reference to “other foreign powers” appears to be directed at Egypt with whom Eritrea has been working closely after relations with Ethiopia deteriorated. Eritrea, through Yemane Gebremeskel’s recent response, denied working with Debretsion’s group. It sees the allegation as “warmongering.”
The opposition parties are calling for intervention from International Community members who were involved in the Pretoria Agreement mediation effort. They fear the situation could worsen and trigger a regional crisis.
They also assert that rule of law has to be observed. Tigray Region Interim Administration has made similar calls to the international community and the Federal government. However, the Federal government has not yet made an official remark in connection with the development in the region.
Getachew Reda’s administration announced yesterday that military generals Loyal to Debretsion’s group have dismantled the Adigrat City Administration by Force. It was forced under the leadership of general Masho that took control of the offices. Similar movies were made in Adi Gudom. Civilians who attempted to resist the move were rounded and shot, according to claims by the Getachew Reda Administration.
Like the Tigray region opposition parties. Getachew Reda’s administration alleges that “foreign powers” are involved in the crisis in the region.
Latest report from an Eritrean news source seems to indicate that pro-Debretsion forces are in control of Mekelle Airport but Getachew Reda has fled to Addis Ababa. He is said to have briefed members of the International community about the situation in Tigray.
