Toronto – The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) on Wednesday called for action after reflecting on the current situation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

In a statement titled “Stop the Suffering of the Tigray People,” released on Wednesday, the party urged the two factions of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) to prioritize the development needs and peace of the people in the region to resolve the ongoing political crisis.

The party criticized the two factions for appealing to the Prosperity Party-led federal government, which it accused of “systematically and deliberately subjecting the people of Tigray to prolonged agony and suffering.” EPRP also stated that the ruling Prosperity Party “does not understand solutions other than war.”

“What we observe is that the two TPLF factions—the Interim Administration and the Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael-led group—are repeatedly pleading to the Prosperity Party, a party that does not understand solutions other than war; a party that has systematically and deliberately led the people of Tigray to extended suffering while instigating conflict within the TPLF,” EPRP said.

The party also blamed the two factions for failing to recognize that the ruling party is exacerbating the crisis in the region.

“The Prosperity Party has been ceaselessly violating the basic rights of the people in Tigray,” the statement added, citing cases of mass arrests, intimidation, rape, and massive displacement, as reported by human rights organizations.

EPRP asserted that the federal government should be held accountable for these violations. “It is unthinkable under any condition that a party responsible for the problems in the region could bring justice to the people,” the statement read.

The statement further noted that the situation in Tigray is worsening, with millions in need of emergency aid. It described the federal government’s response as “irresponsible” and “shameful.”

EPRP stressed that the factions playing a significant role in the crisis—the Getachew Reda and Debretsion groups—must realize that the solution lies in their hands if their priority is truly the people of Tigray, as they claim.

The federal government, the party argued, is fully aware that its past and current actions are fueling conflicts but is deliberately continuing such policies.

Another key point emphasized by EPRP is the need for the TPLF and Interim Administration to engage in constructive dialogue with all stakeholders. The unity of the people of Tigray should take precedence over party interests. The party recommended that the administration collaborate with civil society organizations in the region.

“The people of Tigray deserve to live a life free from attacks, oppression, and isolation,” the statement added.

EPRP called for an end to rights violations, accountability for past abuses, respect for the right to life, and the provision of humanitarian aid to those affected by the crisis. It also urged inclusive political dialogue and restraint from beating war drums to prevent the people of Tigray from living under the constant threat of war.

The ruling Prosperity Party intends to extend the term of the Interim Administration, as announced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during his appearance in parliament on Thursday. This move reportedly requires legislative amendments. The PM claimed to have held discussions with Interim Administration leaders and opposition parties in the Tigray region. His government has been accused of waging “genocide” in Tigray.
