Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a bid to tackle the city’s growing transportation challenges, the Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 modern electric buses into service. The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Adanech Abebe, aims to reduce the burden of public transportation shortages and enhance commuter convenience.
Announcing the rollout on her social media page, Mayor Adanech highlighted the significance of these buses in alleviating the city’s transport difficulties.
“We have introduced 100 modern electric buses into service to ease transportation shortages and reduce the daily struggles of our residents,” she stated.
The new buses are equipped with Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and Fare Collection System (FCS) technology, ensuring a more organized and efficient public transport system.
According to the Mayor, the electric buses offer multiple advantages. They are eco-friendly, operating without emitting pollutants, contributing to a cleaner city. They are also designed for comfort and accessibility, accommodating a large number of passengers with modern features. In terms of affordability and efficiency, the buses are expected to reduce transportation costs while providing faster transit services. Additionally, they will operate on exclusive bus lanes, ensuring a smoother and quicker commute for passengers.
The switch to electric buses will also significantly cut down on fuel expenses, lowering the overall cost of public transportation while promoting a more sustainable urban transport system.
As part of the launch, the 100 new electric buses are offering free transportation services to residents across the city today.
“We want our residents to experience the benefits of this new system firsthand,” the Mayor said, encouraging public participation in the initiative.
The Mayor also extended her gratitude to Belayneh Kinde Group, the first transport operator to collaborate under the public-private partnership framework for this initiative.
“Reducing transportation hardships is a shared vision, and we appreciate the contribution of the private sector in making this a reality,” she remarked.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Addis Ababa’s efforts to modernize its public transport system while promoting sustainable and cost-effective solutions. The city administration plans to expand the fleet further, integrating more electric buses to improve mobility for residents.
Addis Ababa is known for its severe public transportation shortages, with heavily congested roads due to its rapidly growing population. City officials hope that the new electric buses will help alleviate congestion and make commuting more efficient for thousands of daily passengers.
