Toronto – Tadesse Worede, Interim President of Tigray Regional State, is in the capital Addis Ababa this week along with some members of his administration.
The administration announced it in a two line statement on social media. However, it did not disclose the agenda items it is discussing with the Federal government or the government officials the delegation is meeting.
It was the prime minister that usually meets with interim government officials.
Tadesse’s trip came amid reports of the Federal government suspension of budget transfer to the region. According to regional authorities, it has been over two months since the Federal government suspended regular budget transfer.
Only about 30 percent of the budget is reportedly released.
Tadesse Worede’s Interim administration has been under pressure as some public servants and the region’s armed forces have not received salaries for months.
The region has already been under increasing political tension for different reasons.
The TPLF has been attempting to regain total control of the administration – something that does not seem to be acceptable to Tadesse Worede although he was appointed to the position in what appeared back then an appeasement to the TPLF.
In a span of less than two months, there have been two protests involving what the regional government calls “Tigray Defense Force.” They were rebelling over benefits and salary.
There were views that tend to link the attempt to remove Tadesse from this position as a decision that the Eritrean government imposed on TPLF with whom it has allegedly been working for several months in a clear move against the Federal government.
The Federal government has not explained why it suspended the federal budget transfer to Tigray. Some speculate that it is running out of resources.
Others tend to see it as a measure intended to pressure the administration of Tigray to stop alliance with the Eritrean government and spend the budget on “Tigray Defense Force.”
Before his trip to Addis Ababa, Tadesse held a meeting with region, zone and district level senior officials regarding the “challenges the region is facing.”
He alleged that “the challenges and dangers in the Tigray region are deliberately made to be complicated.”
It has been days since he arrived in Addis Ababa and there is no clue if the meeting is already held or what the federal government has decided.
Apart from suspension of the federal budget, there were reports that the amount of gas distributed to the region has been cut down although no figure was provided. The Federal government has been alleging that the TPLF is preparing for another round of war.
Yesterday, TPLF made allegations that Tigray is being “encircled again.”
Meanwhile, opposition parties in the region have been accusing the TPLF of planning to drag the region to another war and working with the Eritrean government.
