Ethiopian Airlines (ET, Addis Ababa International) resumed flights to three airports in northern Tigray on February 3 after suspending them last week due to rising security concerns in the region, according to ch-aviation research.
ADS-B data shows that at least five of the airline’s aircraft resumed services between Addis Ababa International and the Tigray airports of Makale, Indaselassie, and Axum, on February 3:
- Makale: two B737-8s, ET-BAK (msn 62462) and ET-BBA (msn 66151);
- Indaselassie: two DHC-8-Q400s, ET-AVH (msn 4578) and ET-AXX (msn 4615);
- Axum: DHC-8-Q400 ET-AVA (msn 4575).
ch-aviation has contacted Ethiopian Airlines for comment. The airline made no official announcement, but Reuters reported that an airline official had confirmed the resumption of flights.
Dozens of demonstrations erupted across Tigray between January 25 and 27 in major towns like Makale, also known as Mekelle. United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres has urged all parties in Tigray to exercise restraint, resolve disputes peacefully, fully implement the ceasefire, and work with the UN and regional partners to consolidate peace.
