Toronto –  Several protests reported on Friday in the Tigray region of Ethiopia over the House of Federation decision in the “contested areas” which the TPLF authorities claim as “West Tigray” and “South Tigray.”

The protests were organized in several cities.

Protestors demanded that the Federal government take corrective measures on the decision from the House of Federation.

“House of Federation’s decision where the people of Tigray is not represented is unacceptable,” is among the slogans protestors were chanting.

Earlier this week, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced a decision regarding election arrangements in the above-mentioned areas. It made a reference to a letter from the House of Federation saying that the areas will be outside of electoral districts in the Tigray region. Federal high court on Thursday blocked the House of Federation decision.

Humera, Adiremet, Korem Ofla, Tememt and Raya Alamata – electoral districts were to directly vote for the Federal parliament.

These areas were annexed to the Tigray region after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) took federal government power in 1991 and “legalized” it with a constitutional arrangement in 1994.

Politicians have been framing the “disputed” areas as something crucial for the “territorial integrity of Tigray.” On the other hand there have been decades long movements opposing what locals call “imposition of Tigray identity.”

In a related development, TPLF authorities in the region have ordered urgent military conscription in the region.  According to sources, youth are randomly rounded up by security forces to be taken to training facilities.

There have been reports that a considerable number of people in the region, particularly the youth, are fleeing the region to the rest of Ethiopia over fear of renewed war in the region.

District administrations are requested, according to sources,  to conscript  2000 youth and send them to training camps.

Opposition parties and a considerable number of the population in the region, based on ethnic Tigray politicians like Getachew Reda and Gebru Asrat, have been opposing another round of war. As many as 600,000 people were killed during the two years war which ended in November 2022 with the signing of the Pretoria Agreement.
