Toronto – Sudan has reportedly warned Ethiopia, on Monday, over “hostile behavior.” It alleges that the Ethiopian territory is being used for launching drone attacks against the country.
Sudan vows to retaliate to what it calls “violations” of its sovereignty , according to Sudanese sources.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry has released a statement in which it stated that Sudan has been monitoring drone attacks from Ethiopian territory last month and early this month.
It was not specified if there was any damage or causality.
The relations between the two countries deteriorated over the past few years after Sudanese Forces occupied Ethiopian territories during the war between the Ethiopian Federal government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) led Tigray government.
In relation to the conflict in Sudan, the official accusation from Sudan’s Foreign Ministry alleged that Ethiopia is now directly involved in the conflict in the country.
There had been reports that the Rapid Support Force (RSF), which is fighting the Sudanese government, is training forces inside the Ethiopian Border close to Sudan’s Blue Nile State. The location is also allegedly being used as logistical support for RSF Forces and it the United Arab Emirates that is said to be funding the operation.
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not remarked on the allegation at the time of this writing.
Last week, there was a report that president Abdel Fattah al-Burhan requested to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed but the latter declined.
The two countries had also had a dispute over Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam. Sudan has been alighting with Egypt in making claims that the dam impacts the flow of water to the lower riparian countries. There were rounds and rounds of talks between the three countries but Ethiopia managed to complete the hydro electric dam project before any conclusive agreement was reached. Ethiopia’s position has been that it is entitled to an equitable share of the Nile river 85 percent of the water originates from the Ethiopian highlands.
Apart from Egypt, Sudan aligned with Eritrea with whom Ethiopia is said to be on the brink of war. For some, the tension with Sudan is an indication that there will be a conflict zone on the western side of Ethiopia should the country go to war against Eritrea.
