The coming election in Ethiopia is not a real one. Instead, there is something like a Hollywood, Bollywood, or Nollywood-style election. As we have seen in many movies, such elections have directors, actors, and participants who play their roles in a staged process. Everyone in Ethiopia knows that the coming election is no different from a movie drama. Abiy, a fake PhD holder, also knows how to stage fake elections. He is an expert in cheating and deception. The problem he has, however, is the many digital records of his own statements. You can take almost any issue he speaks about and find nearly the opposite coming from the same person’s mouth at another time. The most dramatic part is his apparent delusion that he is convincing people. Those who seem to support him know the reality. But they support him in order to help themselves. It is a mutually beneficial, symbiotic relationship. Even the international community in Addis Ababa knows the truth, but they keep quiet as long as their interests remain intact. Why do we argue that the election is a drama? Let us provide some evidence.
- The election result is already known
There is only one possible outcome: Abiy Ahmed Ali will be the next president. Yes, he will become president. How do we know this? First, he will be elected prime minister. After that, the so-called national reconciliation commission will recommend certain adjustments to the constitution, and the system will be changed to a presidential one. Then, suddenly, Abiy will transition from prime minister to president. The late Prime Minister Meles did something similar, moving from president to prime minister. Vladimir Putin has also done it both ways. So this is not a new method for prolonging one’s stay in power. Abiy will likely follow the same path. But before that happens, the staged election must take place. For Abiy, everything is about deception. It is not about actually having a PhD, but about creating the appearance of having one. It is not about real economic development, but about the appearance of economic progress by transforming Addis Ababa to look like a modern and civilized city. In a similar way, it is not about the election itself, but about creating the appearance of an election in order to gain the legitimacy to continue holding power. Then, the next day and afterward, he can say, “I am the elected leader of the country, and I can do whatever I want.” That is it. Simple.
- The fake opposition party players are already in place
Abiy knows that the TPLF used to create fake opposition parties in order to give the impression that there was a democratic process. Although TPLF was communist at heart, it acted as if it were democratic, largely because its international partners and supporters demanded that the party hold elections. It was only during the election held in 1997 E.C. (2005 G.C.) that something closer to genuine electoral competition occurred during the TPLF-led EPRDF era. Otherwise, most elections were staged in many parts of the country. Abiy learned from that experience and has taken the game to another level. He has chosen all the players. As a disciple of the TPLF, though arguably incapable of understanding complex political theories such as communism, he observed how they maintained this system for years. Now he appears to be following the same model, preparing and promoting parties such as EPRP (EHAPA-ኢህአፓ), National Movement of Amhara (NMA) (የአማራ ብሔራዊ ንቅናቄ – አብን), Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (ECSJ) (የኢትዮጵያ ዜጎች ለማኅበራዊ ፍትህ – ኢዜማ ) and others to play the role of opposition. No party comes to the stage unless Abiy himself accepted it. He will not allow a powerful party like TPLF to go for election in Tigray. No way! Abiy has decided to give 15% of the positions in parliament for the fake opposition parties that he only recommends, to show off as if the was progress in the country.
- Hand-picked people for the opposition parties
Most members of the opposition parties are chosen or personally approved by Abiy Ahmed himself. In NMA (አብን) party, Christian Tadele was imprisoned because Abiy dislikes him. Meanwhile, Belete Mola, a graduate in early childhood studies who now leads the Ministry of Information and Technology, is personally favored by Abiy, even though both come from the same party, they are treated differently according to the preference of the boy King. A similar pattern appears in in ECSJ (ኢዜማ): Genet, a highly capable politician, has been imprisoned, while Abiy’s close ally, Dr. Birhanu Nega, continues to lead the party. Bente Urgesa, a bright politician, was killed by Abiy’s security unit, Kore Nagegna, while Kajala Merdassa, handpicked by Abiy from OLF, served as Minister of Tourism and is now an advisor to the prime minister. Even within the ruling party, Taye Dendea has been imprisoned for speaking about issues Abiy dislikes. Figures such as Dr. Lemma Megersa, Dr. Milkesa, and Dr. Gedu are unable to live in their own country, as they were forced to leave by Abiy and his gangs. He sidelined them, and it has been reported that his security apparatus targeted them for assassination, compelling them to flee. They themselves have testified to this. As a result, nearly every member of the opposition appears to be either recruited or suspended by Abiy and his associates. It is like a movie director who recruits the actors and decides who plays which scene, the outcome is predetermined. So, everything is staged!
- The Election is bought by UAE already
Many people agree that the UAE has influenced Ethiopian politics and brought Ethiopia’s top leadership under its control by investing millions of dollars in Abiy. When Abiy came to power, he said that the country had no foreign currency reserves and could only survive for a few months. Who came to the rescue? It was the UAE. Since then, the country has invested many billions of dollars in Abiy and his allies. Therefore, it cannot afford to lose this election. The UAE supports rebels in Yemen, Libya, and Sudan, but in Ethiopia it has found a huge opportunity. Here, instead of supporting rebels, it supports the government. In Ethiopia, the one who behaves and acts like a rebel and a terrorist—terrorizing its own citizens with drones and artillery—is the government itself. In the past seven years alone, many people have died from Wollega in Oromia to the Tigray and Amhara regions. Who is responsible for all these genocides? The one who sits in 4 Kilo. And who is investing heavily in this murderous leadership? It is the UAE. Therefore, the election is of special interest to that country. There might be other countries involved behind closed doors. These days, from the pattern of events happening in the Middle East, we can see a bigger picture of who else might be helping Abiy Ahmed Ali to destroy his nation. These actors are also highly involved in ensuring that he wins the election. They will not shout “foul” like before. Instead, they will remain silent because they want their interests to stay intact during this turbulent period of global change and the formation of a new world order.
Let everyone know this
Anyone who is helping Abiy stay in power is directly or indirectly responsible for the consequences that are happening and will continue to happen in the country. The bloodshed, injustice, and destruction of the country are due to this incapable leader, who nevertheless holds power as if it were a belief system. It would be far better to challenge this man and save the country from further destruction. There are many good sons and daughters from all walks of life, from every corner of the nation, and from every ethnicity, who could come together to build the nation in the right way. The past seven years in Ethiopia have been among the bloodiest the country has ever seen in its history, yet many people remain complicit. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party destroyed Germany and much of Europe partly because the majority of people remained complicit. It is time to say enough is enough to this madness and to this shameful display and drama that has already cost many lives in the country.
