Toronto – Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration this week said that Ethiopia earned $5.91 billion from export in the past seven months.

As has been the case in the past few years, the government claims that the earning has increased.

This year’s revenue from the sector is up by 17 percent compared to last year during which  $5.05 billion was generated, according to the Ministry.

The government explains the growth in terms of Macro-economic reform Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government introduced in July 2024. “It has become the backbone for the growth of export,” the Ministry claims.

In terms of sectoral performance, the bulk of what was generated is from Mining.  It generated $3.14  billion which the Ministry described as 148.6 percent execution of what was planned.

$2.22 billion was generated from agriculture. Again, the ministry claims that the revenue saw  93.57 percent growth compared to last year. sesame, beans, soya bean, and white beans are among the products that were exported over the past seven months.

The volume of export has shown growth, the ministry. The amount exported is as follows : Sesame 192,381 metric tons, red beans 94,535 tons, soya bean 17,683 tons and white beans  40,314

The accuracy of data from government sources, especially in times of election campaigns like this, is questionable for many.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority was alarming coffee exporters over falling prices at the international market. It urged exporters not to hoard anticipating a better price. It said its recommendation was “research and evidence based.”
