These three Oromo professors expressed deep concern about a potential northern alliance (Fano, TPLF, and Eritrea), describing it as a major threat to the Oromo. Jalata referred to unconfirmed reports of a meeting in Sudan involving these groups, warning it could expand to include countries like Sudan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Muhammad, while denying knowledge of OLA’s involvement, argued that such an alliance would still be dangerous and suggested that the Oromo should arm themselves.
Much of the discussion portrayed Fano as highly organized and well-armed, with claims of secret support from the Amhara Prosperity Party. The speakers also agreed that the Oromo are currently fragmented and disorganized.
However, these claims about a northern alliance and the strength of Fano appear exaggerated and lack verified evidence. What is clear, though, is that these professors—and many Oromo elites more broadly—are increasingly influenced by fear of a perceived northern bloc and the Fano movement.
