Toronto – South Gondar Government Communication on Friday released a statement mourning the zone’s top government and security officials killed in the latest round of Fano forces attack in Nefase Mewucha.
“The forces of destruction on Megabit 9, 2028 [March 18,2026] have attacked government and security officials who were on duty after causing chaos in our zone towns of Nefase Mewucha and Hamusit. Because of this ‘our heros’ received Atse Twodros’ fate rather than surrendering to collaborators and mercenaries,” South Gondar Zone administration said in an Amharic post shared on its social media page.
However, it did not mention the names of the offcials killed. At least five top level governemnt and security officials were reportedly killed. Also, the zone did not specigy the funeral took place or not.
It called on residents in the area to cooperate with law enforcement forces in the fight against Fano forces.
The administration mounted the narrative that the Fano forces – which now it calls “forces of destruction” – are in the service of “our historical enemies.” The Ethiopian Federal government has been alleging that Egypt and Eritrea are supporting the rebels forces in the country.
The Federal government paints the Fano forces in a similar way in what appears to be an effort that supports its conviction that Fano forces do not have a justified cause to take up arms, and that they can “lay down their arms resort to negotiation.”
On the other hand, Fano makes the claim that they are on a mission to “reverse existential threat against the Amhara people.” In the years before the Fano forces took up arms to resist the government, the massacre of ethnic Amharas had been regularly making headlines. Most of the incidents took place in the Oromia region of Ethiopia but there were also similar patterns in the Benishangul Gumuz region where the Fano forces are partially operating.
Although Ethiopian Defense Force senior officials have been making claims that the “extremist force” are weakened, Fano forces continue to make claims of significant military gains over the government.
From this week’s attack in Nefase Mewucha and Hamusit, Fano forces claimed to have killed over 600 government forces. Several Corps of Menelik Command launched a surprise offensive on Wednesday targeting government forces in and government officials in those towns this week.
Apart from killing government officials, they arrested the Mayor of the town.
They also claimed to have seized massive firearms and ammunition from the operations.
The Ethiopian Defense Force deployed forces to the area a day after the incident. Fano forces usually withdraw from towns they control a day or so after major offensive operation which is what appears to be the case with Nefase Mewucha this week.
