Press Release from Salsay Weyane Tigray
Salsay Weyane Tigray has submitted a letter to the House of Federation and the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) on Feb 23, 2026, expressing grave concerns over decisions taken by the former to remove the Western and Southern Tigray zones from constitutionally recognized Tigrayan territory.
In the letters, we called for the immediate reversal of this dangerous and unconstitutional act, which appears intended to legitimize occupation and ethnic cleansing under the guise of legal mechanisms such as elections and referendum. To date, neither the House of Federation nor NEBE has provided an explanation or taken steps to reverse the decision.
As a result, a measure that flagrantly violates the constitution, as well as the rights of refugees and internally displaced persons, remains in force.
Furthermore, recently, a senior federal government official, has publicly endorsed this unlawful decision, stating that the occupied Western and Southern Tigray territories will be treated differently from other parts of Tigray—again, in disregard of constitutional principles and procedures. He also characterized any opposition to this decision as extremism.
We strongly condemn this brazen statement and firmly oppose the actions taken. We reiterate our urgent call on both the House of Federation and NEBE to reverse their unconstitutional course.
