Prosperitarians have become Vultures of Voice.
Prosperity Party loyalists are tightening their hold on free expression, choking out any voice bold enough to challenge their authority.
Recent events underscore this troubling pattern. A prominent Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) preacher, Mesfin Girma, was arrested after ‘daring’ to criticise the Prime Minister’s Social Affairs Advisor, Deacon Danial Kibret, who, with the tacit approval of the Prime Minister, advocated for excluding the Ethiopian diaspora and proposed prohibiting them from settling or being buried in Ethiopia.
Such actions cut to the core of Ethiopia’s values.
This arrest delivers a crushing blow to free speech. Imprisoning a revered preacher for challenging a government advisor on spiritual matters fractures public trust and reveals a deliberate scheme to strip the EOTC of its moral authority before the upcoming election.
Chagrined by his army’s recent defeats by Amhara Fano in the North and the OLF in the West, the Prime Minister now appears to unleash his bottled-up anger on the diaspora, whose remittances are a lifeline for millions. Denying citizens the right to return home, even in death, is a profound betrayal of Ethiopia’s most cherished values.
This campaign to silence dissent is a shameless bid to rewrite Ethiopia’s story by stamping out every voice of opposition. As members of the diaspora, we see through these schemes and pledge to remain the unwavering voice for voiceless Ethiopians, no matter the cost. Ethiopia belongs to all its people, not to Abiy Ahmed Ali alone.
This situation recalls the words of the late South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of oppression.”

የብልጽግና ፓርቲ ታማኞች በነፃነት የመናገር መብት ላይ ቁጥጥራቸውን እያጠበቁ ነው፤ ሥልጣናቸውን ለመገዳደር የሚደፍር ማንኛውንም ድምፅ እያነቁ ይገኛሉ።
የቅርብ ጊዜ ክስተቶች ይህንን አስጨናቂ አካሄድ ያጎላሉ። ታዋቂው የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋሕዶ ቤተ ክርስቲያን (ኢኦተቤ) ሰባኪ መምህር መስፍን ግርማ የታሰሩት፣ የጠቅላይ ሚኒስትሩን የማኅበራዊ ጉዳይ አማካሪ ዲያቆን ዳንኤል ክብረትን ‘ደፍረው’ በመንቀፋቸው ነው። ዳንኤል ክብረት፣ በጠቅላይ ሚኒስትሩ እውቅና፣ በስደት የሚኖሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን (ዲያስፖራው) እንዲገለሉ፣ ወደ አገራቸው እንዳይገቡና በዚያውም እንዳይቀበሩ የሚል ሐሳብ አቅርበው ነበር።
እንዲህ ዓይነቶቹ ድርጊቶች የኢትዮጵያን እሴቶች የሚሸረሽሩ ናቸው።
ይህ እስራት በነፃነት የመናገር መብት ላይ የተሰነዘረ ከባድ ጥቃት ነው። አንድን የተከበሩ ሰባኪ በመንፈሳዊ ጉዳዮች ላይ የመንግሥትን አማካሪ በመሞገታቸው ምክንያት ማሰር፣ በሕዝብ ዘንድ ያለውን እምነት የሚሰብርና ከምርጫው በፊት የቤተ ክርስቲያኒቱን የሞራል ልዕልና ለመንጠቅ የታቀደ ሴራ መሆኑን ያሳያል።
ጠቅላይ ሚኒስትሩ በሰሜን በአማራ ፋኖ፣ በምዕራብ ደግሞ በኦነግ በደረሰባቸው ወታደራዊ ሽንፈት በመበሳጨት፣ የቁጣቸውን ናዳ በሚሊዮኖች ለሚቆጠሩ ወገኖች የሕይወት መሠረት በሆነው በዲያስፖራው ላይ ያወረዱት ይመስላል። ዜጎች ወደ አገራቸው የመመለስ መብታቸውን፣ አልፎ ተርፎም በሞት ጊዜ የመቀበር መብታቸውን መከልከል፣ የኢትዮጵያን ጥልቅ እሴቶች ክህደት ነው።
ይህ የተቃውሞ ድምጾችን የማጥፋት ዘመቻ፣ ሁሉንም ተቃዋሚ ድምጾች በማጥፋት የኢትዮጵያን ታሪክ እንደገና ለመጻፍ የሚደረግ የማያፍር ሙከራ ነው። እኛ የዲያስፖራው አባላት ይህንን ሴራ እንረዳለን፤ ዋጋው ምንም ይሁን ምን ድምፅ ለሌላቸው ኢትዮጵያውያን ጽኑ ድምፅ ሆነን ለመቀጠል ቃል እንገባለን። ኢትዮጵያ የሕዝቦቿ እንጂ የአብይ አህመድ አሊ ብቻ አይደለችም።
ይህ ሁኔታ የሟቹን የደቡብ አፍሪካ ሊቀ ጳጳስ ዴዝሞንድ ቱቱ ንግግር ያስታውሰናል፡- “በግፍ ወቅት ገለልተኛ ከሆንክ፣ ጨቋኙን መርጠሃል ማለት ነው።“
