Toronto – Coalition for Ethiopian Unity (CEU) – a coalition of four opposition political parties in Ethiopia – has unveiled its manifesto as the country is heading to the 7th general election which is scheduled to take place in June this year.
It was unveiled in the capital Addis Ababa.
Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), Amhara Giyonawi Movement, Enat Party, All Ethiopian Unity Party and One Ethiopia Democratic Party formed the coalition in September 2025. However, One Ethiopia Democratic Party formed the coalition and is no longer a member of it.
It was formed in connection with the General election and its future is yet to be discussed among members in the post-election period.
The manifesto lays out where the coalition stands on issues ranging from the Federal system of government to land administration – among other issues.
The coalition supports a Federal form of government, as Abraham Getu who is the president of the coalition, stated. However, it opposed one that is based on ethnic identity.
Ethiopia has experienced violent ethnic conflicts since the introduction of ethnic based political system with a regional ethnic based government. The trend worsened after Abiy Ahmed became prime minister in 2018.
Tens of thousands of Ethiopians have been killed in targeted attacks on ethnic groups, primarily ethnic amhara, (mainly in Oromia and Benishangul regions) which reportedly demonstrated omens of ethnic cleansing. A considerable number of political activists call it even a genocide.
CEU supports a federal administration based on geography, not ethnicity.
Another key issue in Ethiopian politics is land. The coalition opposes the existing policy. Land belongs to the government and ownership of it is on the basis of lease. The coalition advocates for citizens ownership of land.
The coalition has restricted election related activities in areas where there is active conflict and security problems.
Despite reported government repression, the coalition tends to think that peaceful struggle can bring about change. DW Amharic cited Megabi Beluy Abraham Haymanot as saying that “if the people are determined, it is possible to bring change through peaceful struggle.”
Notably, armed groups are fighting the government in the Amhara and Oromia regions. In the north, the prospect of renewed conflict between the TPLF and Abiy Ahmed led government is said to be high.
