Toronto – The Ethiopian government is reportedly introducing a mandatory annual leave for public servants. The measure is said to be part of government policy response to worsening gas shortage in the country.

While there are anonymous sources who informed borkena that there were cancellations of Saturday schedules in some government departments, their reason was unspecified.

Employees of state-owned enterprises, city administration and other government offices are said to be impacted by the decision, according to social media sources.

While public servants constitute the biggest work force in the country, the majority of them rely on public transport rather than private vehicles.

Whether the decision will ease the burden on taxi and bus service in the city remains to be seen. Right now long queues for taxis in Addis Ababa area are reported in the morning and evening rush hours.

Severe fuel shortages have been reported across Ethiopia especially after the outbreak of the war in Iran and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
