Toronto – The Ethiopian government on Wednesday introduced another price increase for fuel products – a second adjustment within a month.
The price increase is effective as of April 1, 2026.
The price the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integrations introduced are as follows :
Gasoline 142.41 birr per liter
Kerosene : 151.39 birr per liter
White diesel : 163.09 birr per liter
Light black diesel : 163 birr per liter
Aviation kerosene : 150.48 birr per litter
The Ministry sent out letters to companies in the industry saying the new increase is based on world fuel prices.
Kassahun Gofe, the Minister, claimed that the government is subsidizing up to 95 Ethiopian birr per litter on diesel and 42 birr per litter on gasoline.
The latest price increase is announced a day after the Minister announced to the public that courtiers who have agreed to sell 183,000 metric ton of fuel notified Ethiopia they are unable to deliver it. It is related to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Ministry, the response to the development is procurement of fuel from spot markets. The price is said to be three times more than the rate Ethiopia used to pay for suppliers.
Domestic gasoline supply is still comparable to the level before the Iran-Israel/US war. However, the supply of white diesel is down to 50 percent, the Minister added.
A barrel of white diesel is now over $230 and gasoline is about $150.
As part of the response to fuel shortage, the Ethiopian government introduced mandatory annual leave of public servants to ease the burden on public transport.
Earlier this week, the Ministry announced that fuel supply to the country is entirely stopped – something that seems to contradict the government’s claim that it is “buying fuel from the spot market with up to three times more price.”
