Toronto – Tadesse Worede, President of Tigray Region Interim Administration – is reportedly in Addis Ababa.
According to Reports from the region, he flew to Addis Ababa on Sunday in the evening. He is expected to hold talks with Federal government officials including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The meeting is said to be a consultative one on current affairs and other crucial issues in the region, the sources added.
He was appointed as Interim President of Tigray on April 8, 2025 , to the disappointment of several notable Tigray politicians , to serve for one year.
He was made to be sworn in before members of the diplomatic corps in Addis Ababa. His appointment at the time came after Getachew Reda, who served the region as interim president for two years was removed in a coup d’etat like political development.
State media at the time portraying him as a person with a good grasp of the failure and strengths of Getache Reda’s administration – not to mention that he was acceptable to TPLF figures which are still in control of the region’s politics and security.
Tadesse was sworn in with eight key commitments including the return of displaced people to their homes and demobilising Tigray People’s Liberation Front Combatants.
Furthermore, at the time when he took power there was widespread fear of renewed conflict in the region.
The assessment from the Tigray region is that Tadesse has not achieved any of the missions he was given. His mandate is coming to an end in three days.
There have been protests in the region after the Federal budget to the region was suspended in an apparent reaction to the transfer of public and social service budget to the TPLF combatants. The organization is believed to have over 200,000 combatants.
Sources in Tigray report that there have been discussions on replacing Tadesse Worede. The TPLF seems to have a better control over the Tigray region than it did a year ago- this time it has the support of the Eritrean government as well.
The political situation in the region is still tense and it remains to be seen if Tadesse Worede’s meeting with the Prime Minister could bring about any change.
