Debretsion - TPLF chairman _ Tigray _ TPLF

Borekna

Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has reportedly dissolved the Pretoria Agreement on Thursday and has endorsed Debretsion Gebremicael to lead the Tigray regional administration, according to sources from the region.

The decision came days after a central committee meeting of the party in Ethiopia’s ancient city in the north, Axum.

The meeting has also rejected Tadesse Worede’s extension of terms as Interim President of the region, according to Dawit Kebede – owner of Awurama Times. The TPLF has lost the designation of a legally registered party with the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia and was not elected to lead the region.

At the time of this writing, the organization has not announced its decision to the public. As well, the source is unspecified if TPLF has notified mediators of the Pretoria Agreement which took place in November 2022 under the auspices of the African Union. Two former presidents – Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya – and Olesegun Obasanjio of Nigeria – were among the key mediators under the umbrella of the African Union.

Tadesse Worede, whom the Federal government granted an extension of one year to lead the interim administration on Wednesday, rejected TPLF’s opposition to extension of his terms.

This latest development in the already tense political situation in the region seems to suggest the inevitability of conflict in the region – something over which people and opposition parties operating in the region have been expressing concern.

The TPLF has – at least on the surface it appears that way – control over the armed forces despite several army divisions part way with the organization and headed to the Afar region and organized themselves as Tigray Peace Force(TPF). This group accuses the TPLF of forming an alliance with Eritrea and preparing to drag the region to another round of conflict.

Tadesse Worede has served as the commander of the “Tigray Army” but it is unclear if he has any influence in the military at this point. His fate is uncertain.

The Federal government has not reacted to the new development at the time of this writing.
