Ethiopian Airlines has firmed up its commitment to six additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets, converting options from a landmark 2023 agreement into a confirmed order as it accelerates long-haul growth.

The airline will take delivery of the 787-9 variant, which will be deployed to expand its intercontinental network from its hub in Addis Ababa and boost cargo capacity on high-demand routes. The move reinforces Ethiopian’s position as the largest operator of the 787 in Africa.

Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said the order reflects the airline’s long-term growth strategy and commitment to modern, fuel-efficient aircraft that enhance both operational performance and passenger experience.

For Boeing, the deal underscores continued demand for the Dreamliner platform, which is widely used for long-haul routes thanks to its lower fuel consumption and operational flexibility. Ethiopian already operates both the 787-8 and 787-9 across routes linking Africa with Europe, Asia and North America, as well as within the continent.

The additional aircraft are expected to support network expansion, improve efficiency, and enable greater cargo capacity, particularly on key trade corridors where belly-hold freight demand remains strong.
