Toronto – Tension in Tigray region appears to be reaching to a breaking point as the TPLF is ousting the Interim president with the aim to restore Status quo before the two years bloody war between 2020 and 2022 which the Pretoria Agreement ended.
Notably, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) rejected the election the TPLF conducted amid a nationwide campaign against Coronavirus. That election is believed to be one of the factors for the war. The unsuspecting attack on the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force was the immediate cause for the war.
General Tadesse Worede on Tuesday had a press conference in Mekelle in which he responded to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) decision to reinstate TPLF as the “legitimate” administration.
He said the decision is something that voids the Pretoria Agreement. He vehemently criticized the TPLF move.
“Possible repercussions of the decision is something that needs to be seen with caution,” he is quoted as saying. He boldly said that the choice is between renewed conflict or perpetuating existing peace. For him, the return of displaced people to their areas is a priority.
He has also remarked on the political tension in the region. He called for political divergences to be resolved through dialogue , “not through character assassination.”
Last week, the TPLF central committee held a meeting and formally rejected the extension of Tadesse Worede’s terms in office by one more year.
The organization cited what it calls “unilateral action” on the part of the Federal government to extend the term which is, it says, against the Pretoria Agreement. The Federal government says the decision of the extension of the term is legal.
The TPLF has reportedly offered Tadesse Worede three options ; to continue his struggle with the TPLF, to emigrate to a country of his choice or face a military action – according to Tigray linked Soloda Media. Tadesse did not directly remark on this. However, he reportedly vowed that he will not leave the region.
During his press conference, he said that the Interim Administration will continue service delivery.
TPLF’s actions, which are believed to be backed by the Eritrean government, have triggered from other politicians as well. Getachew Reda, former president of the Interim Administration and spokesperson of TPLF, called the TPLF decision regarding TPLF “deeply alarming development.” In a message on his X page , he said that “The international community must, therefore, take urgent note of this alarming development.”
Opposition parties operating in the region are also expressing concern. Salsay Weyane on Monday released a statement in response to the development. It said “Rising Political Tensions in Tigray Demand Urgent Dialogue and Inclusive Solutions.” It remarked that the
“The escalating tensions surrounding the extension of the tenure of Tigray’s Interim Administration have reached a critical point, posing a serious risk of relapse into conflict.”
The Federal government has not yet reacted to the development in the region.
