Toronto – Ethiopian Rebel forces on Wednesday claimed they launched a surprise attack on the town of Densa – located only 10 kilometers from Bahir Dar city – seat of the Amhara regional administration.

Estibel Alemu, Amhara Fano National Movement Tewodros Command Deputy Public Relation, told Ethiopian Media Service that 14 anti-riot forces were captured along with Bren machine gun from this operation.  He also claimed that the town came under the control of Forces. It is unclear if the town is still under their control.

A video footage purportedly showing captured Anti-riot forces was aired on Ethiopian Media Services.

No information was released regarding casualties from both sides from this operation.

In the east of the region, The Menelik Command of Fano reported intense battle in the Chobi Ber area and Eyob areas of Raya Kobo district. The battle started as early as 6 a.m. in response to government forces’ operation.

Again Fano forces are claiming significant gain from this operation but the casualties are not quantified.

The government has not remarked on their claims. However, it is making a counter claim.

In a news release shared on its social media page,  the Ethiopian Defense Force on Wednesday said “it has been clearing extremist forces in the South Gondar area.”

It said it launched a series of operations in Tachi Gaynt, Lay Gaynt specifically in the districts of Titara, Sali, Wollela Bahir and Semanda Junction. Gunmen whom it linked to “robbery” in the area were “wiped out.”

The Ethiopian Defense Force did not disclose the number of casualties. However, it said that it has seized 118 Jerrycan of gasoline the “extremists” forces allegedly stored in an unspecified location.

Meanwhile, Eshetu Yesuf, Amhara regional state peace and security office head made claims that the “Fano forces are weakened and losing public support in the region.”  It was in an interview with the state-owned media in the region – AMC – that he made the claim. Furthermore, the said “33,000 fano forces have accepted the peaceful option,” indicating surrender cases.  This week, fano forces were holding political engagement, as EMS reported, with the people in areas that are under their control in Gojjam.

It has been at least two years since the government made recurring claims that the fano forces are weakened and could not stand their ground in a military operation situation.

Early this month, Fano forces captured a senior military commander  and claimed to have killed over 300 government forces/
