Toronto – The crisis in the Tigray region of Ethiopia is worsening. The TPLF has rejected extension of terms of the Interim administration on grounds that it “violates the Pretoria agreement”, and consequently passed a decision to reinstate the Pre-war Tigray Regional State.

TPLF notified Tadesse Worede to peacefully “handover” the administration which the latter sees as “nonsense.” He also warned that the TPLF move is not desirable for the region.

The Federal government is yet to respond. It does not have a structure in the region to enforce law – like a federal police. And the Interim administration does not have a means to protect itself from forceful TPLF takeover of power.

The diplomatic community – including the European Union –  is calling for deescalation.  The United States is reportedly considering leveraging the sanction regime against TPLF leaders including asset freeze to influence change.

No sign of deescalation so far.

Borkena spoke to Abera Nigus, Addis Ababa based lawyer who is from the Tigray region. Describing the interim administration as “orphan,”  he emphasized that the focus  both for the Federal government and TPLF – whom he described  as having similar nature – on the priority : avoiding war. He also recommended how that can be achieved.
