Calgary Police Undertaking Homicide Investigation

Toronto – An Eritrean father in Calgary on Wednesday killed two of his children and called the police to report it.
Police said it was the father who called them and that he confessed. CTV News quoted Sgt. Mark Rahn said “The accused contacted 911 and stated that he had killed his children and gave his location.”
According to the source, the children were killed a little before midnight but the father brought the bodies to police in North West Calgary 10 hours after committing the horrifying murder.
Calgary Police on Thursday shared a brief update on its social media page.
“Today, Thursday, April 30, 2026, at just after 10 a.m., we received a phone call that led us to the 4300 block of 14 Street N.W. Upon arrival, we located a vehicle with two deceased children inside. At this time, the deaths are believed to be suspicious and our Homicide Unit is investigating. The person in custody is 37 years of age.
The story is circulating on social media among the Habesha Community (Ethiopians and Eritreans).
Victims are five and three years of age ( a boy and girl respectively). Although names are being circulated on social media with pictures, borkena is unable to publish it for privacy and public safety reasons in accordance with public ban.
The couples,whose names are not released, have lived together for six years and did have a domestic history with Calgary police.
The mother was living in Ruth’s House, a shelter facility for women. She is said to be devastated and was unable to stand on her own at the St. Michael Eritrean Orthodox Church in the city.
The community is mourning the unimaginable tragedy.
CTV quoted Goitom Mengesha who with St. Michael Eritrean Orthodox Church as saying “It has never happened in our community, and it is a devastation for us and the whole community,” said
The father has made his first court appearance on Friday
