Ethiopian Federal Police Confirms Audit Report Finding but claims hard to substantiate with evidence due to the complex nature of corruption

Borkena
Toronto – An Audit report from Ethiopia’s Federal government has reportedly revealed that an amount close to 5 percent of the country’s entire budget was misappropriated.
The Federal Auditor is behind the finding, as was the case in the past.
Senior government officials and actors have reportedly stolen about 98 billion Ethiopian birr, according to reports from Addis Ababa.
The audit report covers the nine months performance of the current fiscal year in the country.
Addis Ababa based borkena reporter cited the Ethiopian reporter to report that the Federal police has confirmed that Audit revealed a damage in the above mentioned amount to the public coffer.
The Ethiopian Parliament is aware of it. According to sources, the Federal police presented a nine months performance report to the Parliamentary Justice and Legal Affairs Standing Committee.
Commissioner Mulisa Abdissa, Federal Police Criminal Investigation Operation Department Deputy Head, is cited as saying “corruption is complex as actors implement it in a sophisticated way which makes it difficult to substantiate with evidence.”
And one of the reasons that makes it difficult, for him, is that those who are involved in corruption siphoned it overseas.
Too many important details are still not disclosed to the public. Among other things, the Federal police did not say if it is investigating the Federal government officials at this point.
In March this year, the Federal police arrested Ethiopian Petroleum Supply Enterprise Executive Esmelealem Mihretu.
Last year, the Ethiopian parliament announced that “it will be taking action” on government institutions with repeated audit findings. No reporters of actions so far.
But the action it reportedly took today does not seem to suggest that the parliament has a commitment to fight grand corruption in the country. According to credible sources, reporters are not banned from having access to the parliament except for state-owned ones.
