Toronto – Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on Thursday held what is described as its “first cabinet meeting” in Mekelle after reinstating the pre-war regional council in a way that defies the Pretoria Agreement and the Federal Government.

It was held under intense military escort in Mekelle. It came days after Gebretsion Gebremichael was sworn in as president.

Tadesse Worede, whose extension of terms as president of interim administration was rejected by TPLF, released a brief message in response to the TPLF action.

In a brief statement posted on the social media page of Tigray region president, Tadesse stated :

Rebuffing repeated calls to avert the negative repercussions of recent developments through dialogue and mutual understanding among Tigrayans, the so-called “elected” entity, under the protection of security forces, held its first cabinet meeting today, May 8, 2026, inside the meeting halls of the Tigray Regional Interim Administration. Since today marks the beginning of the next phase of a dangerous journey, the group that has taken over the interim administration by force bears sole responsibility for any and all consequences that may ensue.

Notably, about three-fourth of his interim administration was composed of TPLF. He revealed the data during a recent interview with Reyout Media.

The possible action Tadesse hinted is unspecified.

Ethiopian Airforce Fighter jets have been maneuvering over the skies of Mekelle on Thursday, according to reports from the region.

Earlier this week, The European Union expressed concern over escalation in the region and warned that renewed conflict would impact the entire region.

The TPLF on Thursday announced that it is ready for unconditional negotiation. The statement was in response to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia allegation that TPLF is collaborating with Sudan.

The Federal government is yet to respond to the call for unconditional negotiation.

Meanwhile, fears are growing  in the region  that war could break out any time.

Political activists and opposition parties from the region including the new Sembert party have been warning that Tigray region can no longer afford to find itself in another conflict.

Displaced people from the last war are still not returned.
