Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) undertook its first cabinet meeting in Mekelle in six years. It took place in the President’s Office at Dejen Hall.
Debretsion was “sworn in” as President this last Monday after reinstating the pre-war regional council in the region. The TPLF does not have a legal political status as the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia cancelled its registration on Alleged grounds of breaching rules.
Deberetshion’s cabinet meeting reportedly discussed post-conflict recovery efforts in the region. The emphasis was on what the organizations identified as priority areas including “rebuilding institutions,” administrative affairs and social service delivery.
No further detail was immediately available for the public.
Meanwhile, Tadesse Worede, interim president of the region whose term was extended for another year, criticized what he described as forceful measures the TPLF has been taking including removing him from the position. He has been describing the TPLF move as undesirable and that it will reignite conflict in the region.
He released a brief statement on Friday stating that the TPLF will be responsible for consequences that follow due to its forceful action.
The TPLF is believed to be getting full support from the Eritrean government.
The Federal government accused TPLF of serving Sudanese Interest – an allegation that TPLF denied.
The situation in the region remains tense. There are speculations that military conflict could break out any time.
