Toronto – Ethiopia’s ruling party – Prosperity Party – will be running without opposition in at least 64 electoral districts, signaling that the outcome is already predetermined.
Key opposition parties have threatened to withdraw from the election which is scheduled for June 2026. They cite irregularities in the pre-election stage including harassments of opposition party members and candidates in some parts of the country – particularly in south Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, state funded, on Friday confirmed that there have been violations in pre-election processes.
Meanwhile, Ethiopians in the Diaspora are calling for cancellation of this year’s election – which they describe as a sham election – on grounds of the security situation in the country.
The Amhara region of Ethiopia is still a conflict zone as Fano forces continue armed resistance against the government.
Most parts of the Oromia region are also experiencing conflict for over six years now. In this part of the country, the Oromo etho-nationalist militant group – Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) extensively operates armed insurrection.
A considerable number of Ethiopian organizations in the diaspora tend to think that the election is a waste of money while it will not produce a legitimate result.
The government reportedly spent over 10 billion birr for the election. About a week or so ago, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia announced that it spent an additional 1.5 billion birr due to voter registration extension by two weeks.
