The victim, Tegegne Balcha.

Borkena

Toronto – Police in Addis Ababa shot dead a man in the Shiro Media area on Thursday.

The victim is identified as Tegegne Balcha (who was also known as Ororo), according to sources from Addis Ababa. He appears to be in his forties.

Police shot four bullets at the victims – just outside of the police station.

He was reportedly sitting in “Motor tera” locality of Shiro Media with his friends in the area where he usually hangs out when police in a patrol pick up approached him , and took him to Shiro Media Police Division 02.

One of the police did have a feud with him, according to sources who cite eyewitness accounts on condition of anonymity for security reasons. The cause is unspecified.

Apparently, there was an exchange of words but Tegne did not resist the arrest. When they arrived at police station 02, the same police pulled a handgun and shot him four times.

No official statement from Addis Ababa police or Federal police so far. However, there are reports that the victim attempted to “throw a punch.”

What is also reported is that the victim was not drunk or high at the time of the arrest.  The police officer who is involved in the homicide does not seem to be arrested, according to sources.

Tegne Balcha was known in the Community

The victim is apparently known to many in the area. He was reportedly in the Ethiopian Cultural Dress business. The government demolished his store in connection with the Addis Ababa Corridor development project. He went bankrupt.

He was also known to police as he was arrested due to unspecified cause and was later released on bail.

He was laid to rest on Friday. A large crowd attended the funeral. Video footage circulating on social media purportedly shows that people attending the funeral were demanding for justice and an end to what some describe as “lawlessness” in the country including from law enforcement forces.

Police Brutality has been recurring in Addis Ababa in recent years.
