- “Oh, that my head was a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people.” (Jeremiah 9:1)
- Throughout history and across generations, true artists have cried out for suffering people, pleading to God for intervention and inspiring their communities to pursue justice and peace.
- Spiritually, King David used music to overcome the tormenting spirit that troubled King Saul, even while Saul plotted to kill David out of jealousy (1 Samuel 16:14). We also see this when Miriam led songs of victory after the Israelites were freed from the oppressive captivity of Pharaoh in Egypt(Exodus 15:20)
- Likewise, in Ethiopia, strong traditional warriors and patriotic singers encouraged our heroes through songs during the Battle of Adwa, which gave Africa and Black people a historic victory against colonial aggression. Our forefathers also paid the ultimate sacrifice to save Ethiopia from the second colonial invasion by Fascist forces during World War II.
- Today in Ethiopia, many secular and spiritual gospel singers continue praising leaders from the time of the emperor to the current administration while ignoring the suffering, injustice, and hunger faced by our people. Only a few determined singers have courageously presented advocacy songs for our beloved Ethiopia.
- Some deceptive individuals condemn every prophetic song and artistic expression as “worldly” whenever it challenges their political or personal interests, while they remain silent about openly wicked behavior and immoral actions committed by some so-called gospel singers, including adultery and other scandals exposed publicly.
- Let us all echo the wailing of our people so that Almighty God, and all authorities whom He has allowed to govern, may intervene in the nonstop tragedy facing our beloved Ethiopia. May the promise be fulfilled: “Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God” (Psalm 68:31).
