Toronto – Former Ethiopian Defense Chief of Staff, Samora Yonus who is also a former TPLF fighter and party member, is speaking out against the decision which brought TPLF back to power in the Tigray Region.
“The decision to restore former leaders and council (in Tigray) subjected the people to excessive anxiety, ” he said in an interview with Wogahat Newspaper this week.
Samoura added that the people of Tigray is not a personal property of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and that it should not be held hostage to the party.
He expressed that those who are behind the decision to restore the pre-war regional council and administration to power are not more than 100. He thinks that it is a decision informed by the aim to avoid accountability for past crimes.
In his view, a new political force should take over power in the Tigray region. However, he did not specify as to who he is referring to. There are at least three ethnic Tigray opposition parties operating in the region. They have been calling for an all inclusive transitional government until elections are held in the region.
The TPLF has declared that the Interim Tigray Region Administration is no longer in place. Tadesse Worede whose term in office was extended for another year as president of the Interim Administration is still in Mekelle despite a reported threat to his life.
The Federal government has not yet responded to the station. Getache Reda, former TPLF spokesperson and first president of the interim administration, reportedly said this week that Abiy Ahmed’s administration is “not interested in war in the Tigray region.”
