Toronto – Hours after reports that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has detained Interim President Tadesse Worede, credible sources from the region say the story is not true.
Awramba Times, with its access to information in the region, on Wednesday said it has confirmed that the reported condition of Let. General Tadesse Worede is far from the truth.
The general will be giving interviews to unspecified media outlets in the region to clarify on several questions being raised in connection to his condition. Timeline for it not provided.
At the end of April this year, the Federal government extended Tadesse Worede’s terms in office as president of Tigray Interim Administration by one more year. However, the TPLF rejected the extension alleging that it violates the Pretoria Agreement. The TPLF then removed the president forcefully to declare its chairman, Debretsion Gebremichael, president. The regional council that existed before the war was reinstated.
The Interim Administration was formed on the basis of the Pretoria Agreement – a Cessation of Hostilities Agreement the African Union brokered (it appears at least on the surface) that ended one of the bloodiest wars in the history of Ethiopia. At least 600,000 people are believed to be killed due to the war between the TPLF led Tigray regional state and the Federal government (November 2020-November 2022).
There was fear that the TPLF action would reignite war in the region. However, the Federal government has not responded militarily. It has been silent with an apparent motive to avoid war as the 7th general election is scheduled to take place next week.
On the other hand, the TPLF released a statement after taking office by force inviting the Federal government for unconditional negotiation to which the Federal government has not responded.
However, it appears that the Debretsion-led TPLF has been making attempts in the backdoor to hold negotiations with the Federal government.
According to Awramba Times, TPLF has been approaching unspecified western Europe diplomats seeking mediation with Abiy Ahmed’s government. The response was conditional : “Stop obstructing the Interim Administration, apologize officially for illegal activity by claiming to ‘restore government.” However, the source unspecified the response to the conditions.
