NAIROBI , Kenya – Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has donated the $50,000 honorarium he received from the University of Michigan in 2023 to two local organizations operating in the Tigray region. The funds are designated to support the rehabilitation and economic empowerment of women who suffered severe hardships during the recent conflict.
The donation was given during a press event today in Mekelle. It was announced that 5.2 million Ethiopian Birr was shared equally between the two groups. Mums for Mums and the Tigray Women’s Association each received 2.6 million Birr to help with their community recovery programs.
At the event, Ashenafi Asmelash, the CEO of Mums for Mums, said the money was very timely. He said that the mothers in Tigray are going through tough times after the war and that this support will greatly help their efforts to help women in need.
Abeba Gebreselassie, the chairperson of the Tigray Women’s Association, explained how the money would be used. She said the 2.6 million Birr would be given as 65,000 Birr each to women in their skills training programs. This will help them start small businesses and become financially independent.
The two-year war, which officially ended in late 2022, caused a lot of damage to the region. Women were especially affected, facing problems like losing homes, income, and dealing with trauma. Both groups said the money would be important for long-term recovery. They thanked Dr.Tedros for his generous donation and his support for the communities in his home region.
