Nairobi, Kenya – European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has described Ethiopia as a key partner for the bloc following high-level talks in Addis Ababa focused on security, economic cooperation, and investment.

Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos on Wednesday.

The discussions addressed pressing regional security challenges, including the war in Sudan, the terrorist threat posed by Al-Shabaab in Somalia, and Iran’s attack on its neighbor.

The officials also discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and its wider global impact. Kallas said stronger relations between the EU and Ethiopia serve the interests of both sides.

She said the partnership was already producing tangible results and that the EU was ready to deepen cooperation, create more business opportunities, and attract additional investment.

Kallas’s visit followed the EU-Ethiopia Business Forum and the announcement of a major investment package under the Global Gateway strategy. The strategy supports initiatives focused on the digital economy, clean energy, and sustainable growth in Ethiopia.
